SUBJECT: Definition of "multimedia"

STATUS: Personal Contribution

REQUESTED ACTION: Provide comments by September 15

At the SC18/WG1 SWG 01 meeting on the JTC1 model and framework for multimedia and hypermedia last week, it became clear to me that an agreed definition is required for the term "multimedia". I propose the definition below (despite what is in the PREMO NP) but welcome comments on it. I plan to submit the (revised) definition to the meetings of the US TAGs to SC18 and SC24 during their September and October meetings.

Multimedia: An adjective that can be applied to the creation, storage, revision, compression, transmission, or presentation of information with the following characteristics:
		- it is digitally encoded
		- its presentation involves at least two "types" of information (text, graphics, raster image, animated graphics, moving image, audio)
		- its presentation is computer controlled
		- its presentation involves a dependence on time, either between two or more pieces of content (e.g., before, after, during) or within a time dependent piece of content (audio, video, animated graphics)

All of these characteristic must be present to justify the use of the term "multimedia"
