ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11

           N1785

          July 1997

Title: Liaison statement to SC 24 and VRML Consortium

Source: Convenor of MPEG

ISO/IEC/JTC1/SC 29/WG11(MPEG) wishes to thank SC24 for their liaison of 15
July 1997 on the deficiencies that
regretfully found their way into our document N1692 "Working Draft 4.0 of
ISO/IEC 14496-1" during the frenzy of
preparation and the meeting of extremely tight deadlines. At our recent
meeting in Stockholm we have taken steps to address
these deficiencies.

In particular, we have removed all text copied from any draft of the VRML
standard, including node names. We have also
referenced DIS 14772 where appropriate.

As you strongly urge, we intend to work closely and cooperatively with the
VRML Consortium and SC24 to develop the
technology in MPEG-4 needed for a rich set of multimedia products and
services. We believe this will result in an MPEG-4
standard that will serve as a stimulus to both the 3D Graphics and the
multimedia industries.

In this regard we would like to invite you to our next ad hoc committee
meeting on scene description in MPEG-4. It will take
place in Rennes, France on September 24-26, 1997.

Our next general MPEG meeting is in Fribourg, Switzerland on October 27-31,
1997 to which you are also wholeheartedly
invited.

Please find attached our document "MPEG-4 Systems Methodology and Work Plan
for Scene Description" describing in
detail the technical framework and design philosophy of MPEG-4. Also, when
it is ready at the end of August, we will send
you our document "Working Draft 5.0 of ISO/IEC 14496-1."

We look forward to working closely with you on these matters.
