Dear Vlad SKARDA:

For years, the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Sloan School of Management has been concerned with the management of
technological innovation. One of our current research priorities is
how companies and other enterprises use interorganizational linkages to
spur technological innovation.

The purpose of this letter is to invite you to participate in our research
project. This will require you or someone in your organization to complete a
questionnaire on technology alliances and cooperative R&D ventures. In
appreciation of your help, we will mail you an executive report of the
results of the study. You may find these results useful in planning future
collaborations. In addition, we will hold a random drawing of all
participants who complete the questionnaire and will award the winner an
honorarium of US$250.

Your participation is essential to the success of our research. Please
be assured that MIT will take all possible steps to ensure STRICT
CONFIDENTIALITY. Only aggregate results will ever be reported,
and only the investigators listed below will have access to the responses.
We hope that you will find it worthwhile to contribute by sharing your
insights on the outcome of one of your external technology relationships.

We would appreciate it you would take a few minutes to answer the following
three questions. Your response is greatly appreciated and will
help in providing demographic information on European R&D. PLEASE RESPOND
BY 25 MARCH 1996 if at all possible. If you have
any questions, please feel free to contact the Principal Investigator,
Christopher L. TUCCI, at the coordinates below. Thank you!

> IMPORTANT. Please place responses between the "arrows."
> EXAMPLE: Imagine that you use "groupware" in your job.
> You would therefore choose answer '1' to the following question:
>
> Do you personally use "groupware" such as Lotus Notes, in your job?
> 1=yes
> 2=no
> --><--
>
> You would place the cursor between the arrows and type the number '1'
> so the final result would look like this:
>
> Do you personally use "groupware" such as Lotus Notes, in your job?
> 1=yes
> 2=no
> -->1<--
