Subject: RIN locale papers
X-Charset: ASCII
X-Char-Esc: 29

The locale papers distributed was discussed at the RIN meeting in Sweden
this week. There were several comments to them, including:

1. The naming scheme should be discussed with XoJIG - RIN would prefer
XoJIG to come with a proposal, and then just use that naming,
so that any incompatibility could be avoided.

The RIN "operational rules" paper should be seen as a discussion paper
for RIN/XoJIG communication.

2. the characters accepted in the locale name should be restricted
to the POSIX portable filename character set. XPG4 has changed
the locale description to be a filename - this was not the case with
XPG3. So the portable filename characters should be used.
This excludes use of eg. "," and ";" in the name.

3. the name of the locale should be at most 14 characters
long - this length problem could also be solved by using directories.

4. some of the fields of the name should be described further.

5. RIN adopted the "locale guidelines" as a working guideline,
that is we will try it out and Canada promised to work on
a Canadian locale based on the paper.
