             WG11 Convener report to SC22, June 1997

1. WG11 Participation

A WG11 meeting was held in London in November 1998 (report of the meeting
is in SC22 N2652); the attendance at this meeting was minimal.

A tentatively scheduled WG11 meeting for August 1998 will not take place
due to delays in producing the 2nd CD of LIA-2.

2. Issues for the August 1998 Plenary

2.1 ToR of WG11

The current Terms of Reference of WG11 is (see SC22 N2698): "Study binding
issues between programming languages and the abstract facilities with
which they interface or interact. Serve as the SC22 focal point for
coordinating SC22 comments on SC21 bindings".
It is proposed to bring this ToR in line with the TOR of other WGs, and to
strike the sentence about SC21. Proposed text for a new ToR: "To study
binding issues between programming languages and the abstract facilities
with which they interface or interact, and to propose, develop and maintain
ISO standards in this area."

2.2 Reconfirmation of ISO/IEC 10967-1:1994

With reference to SC22 N2674: WG11 recommends reconfirmation of ISO/IEC
10967-1:1994 - Language Independent Arithmetic - Part 1: Integer and
Floating Point Arithmetic.

2.3 Projects Not Reaching CD Stage Within Three Years of NP Approval

With reference to SC22 N2698: LIA-3 will be produced after LIA-2 has
become stable and is well underway. A first draft for SC22 Review and
Comment is expected by fall 1999.

3. Work Item JTC1.22.16 - Common Procedure Calling Mechanism

This project is finalized: the document is published as ISO/IEC 13886:1996.

4. Work Item JTC1.22.17 - Language Independent Datatypes

This project is finalized: the document is published as ISO/IEC 11404:1996.

5. Work Item JTC1.22.28 - Language Independent Arithmetic, Part 1

This project is finalized: the document is published as
ISO/IEC 10967- 1:1994.

6. Work Item JTC1.22.33 - Language Independent Arithmetic, Part 2

DoC on the first FCD and the ballot text for the 2nd FCD will be available
in July 1998.

7. Work Item JTC1.22.34 - Language Independent Arithmetic, Part 3

The work on this part of IS 10967 (on complex arithmetic and procedures)
will follow (in time) the work on part 2,

8. Language Independent Service Specifications

PDTR 14369 is under registration ballot (see SC22 N2658; end of ballot:
1998-06-30). It is the intention of WG11 to handle comments on the ballot
by email; unless there are many and/or controversial comments no WG11
meeting will be necessary to complete this document.

9. Meetings

It is planned to have a WG11 meeting shortly after the ballot on the 2nd
FCD for LIA-2 closes.

10. Liaisons

Liaisons exist with the following SC22 WGs: WG2 - Pascal, WG3 - APL, WG4 -
COBOL, WG9 - Ada, WG14 - C, WG20 - Internationalization and
WG22 - PCTE. Also, liaison representatives from SC24 (Graphics) and SC26
